I’m not much for holidays (humbug, I know), but I do like to give meaningful, sustainable, and useful gifts.

So, if you are still looking for a special gift for someone, or for yourself, I present my tightly curated recommendations. Most are books; some are not. Take a look and maybe you’ll discover something new (and it’s not too late—especially if you order from Amazon)!

The Illustrated Walden: Thoreau Bicentennial Edition by Henry David Thoreau–with great illustrations. A classic!

The Course of Love: A Novel by Alain de Botton (if you read my newsletter, the Ampersand, you know I love de Botton!)

How to be an Explorer of the World: Portable Life Museum by Keri Smith. Charming hand drawings and prompts to inspire you to document and observe the world around you as if you’ve never seen it before.

Atlas Obscura: An Explorer’s Guide to the World’s Hidden Wonders by Joshua Foer (the co-founder and chairman of Atlas Obscura, the popular website that chronicles “curious and wondrous places”), Dylan Thuras, and Ella Morton. If you are familiar with the website, this book is just as compelling. Hard to put down.

Waking, Dreaming, Being: Self and Consciousness in Neuroscience, Meditation, and Philosophy by Evan Thompson and Stephen Batchelor. Buddhism + cognitive science + sleep + dreams? What’s not to love?

Goal Zero 32003 Black/Green Lighthouse Mini Rechargeable Lantern I love Goal Zero products. I just bought their solar generator (and this lantern) for my upcoming off-grid adventures. This lantern also has a USB port to charge your phone—it’s great for camping, power failures, and the Zombie Apocalypse—see solar charging kit, below.

Goal Zero 41022 Guide 10 Plus Solar Recharging Kit keeps the above lantern, and a pack of rechargeable batteries ready when you need them (as long as the sun’s out).

KeepCup Brew Glass Reusable Coffee Cup I love my Keep Cup—if you follow me on Instagram, you know this is true.

Handground Precision Coffee Grinder I bought mine during their Kickstarter campaign—it is a joy to use.

That’s it for me for the year. I hope you find something delightful from my list to give to someone you love.

Sending my warmest wishes to you and yours for a calm ending to 2016 and a bright new start to 2017!
